To advance the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

Description:
UCP provides services to children and adults. It is the belief of the Board of Directors and staff at UCP that individuals have the right to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, and vocationally to their fullest potential. UCP serves individuals of any age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, or developmental disability. Our services are not limited to individuals with cerebral palsy. Most of our program participants do not have cerebral palsy.
UCP of Utah has several programs in place to support these beliefs. These programs are;Supported Living - Group home and independent living, Family Support, Information and Referral, Equipment Purchase and Foundations Day Training.

History:
A History of United Cerebral Palsy
United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Utah is a member of the National Organization of United Cerebral Palsy providing services to people with disabilities since 1951.

1951-52 initial charter formed with National UCPA in New York. ABC TV President Leonard Goldensen and Jack Hausman had children with disabilities and were the driving force for the formation of the organization.

1952-68 There were limited services. Jess and Marilyn Peck established physical therapy services for about 100 families. Dan Kostopulos began building Camp Kostopulos; (Camp K) an outdoor learning center. His untimely passing slowed the camps completion.

1968-82 Widowed Helene Kostopulos solicited Camp Kostopulos to take on the name of United Cerebral Palsy. Gary Totland, the executive director completed Camp Kostopulos and provided after school and community based programs for 96 people with disabilities.

1982-85 A federal grant became available for UCP to move people from institutions to the community. Two independent living group homes were established in West Jordan. The budget was $148,000 and provided services for 18 individuals. UCP of Utah was a leader in pioneering this innovative model.

1985-96
UCP developed more independent programs which included individuals moving into their own apartments. Camp K and UCP decided to separate. The goal of Camp K was to provide recreation for all disabilities, while UCP wanted to concentrate services on independent living and family services. UCP continued building up the independent living apartment services, established family support and statewide services such as Respitality, Family TIES, Information and Referral, Lending Library, Equipment Purchase Assistance, and Legislative collaboration.

1996-1999
UCP of Utah has over 8 services statewide, reaching many people in a variety of ways. The goal is to maintain safety standards and quality services, expand and increase the assistive technology network, lending library and equipment purchase. People were assisted in their own apartments as UCP expanded the residential programs. More services were offered to families.

2000-Present
After paying rent for inferior office space, UCP purchased the new administration building with mortgage payments substantially less than the previous rent paid. The end result being, great new office space and more money for our programs. Our new office also houses UCP Foundations; a day program developed this same year. UCP took over the management of our HUD group homes to save costs and provide better services. On October 31st, 2001, United Cerebral Palsy was presented with the prestigious Golden Key Award by the Governors Council.
Currently, we serve 65 individuals with ranging disabilities in our residential program, we assist 60 families in our family services programs, and day training has 20 participants. UCP employs approximately 108 people to carry out the above services.
