Description:
The Governor's Commission on Volunteers . The Commission is made up of 25 members appointed by the Governor and chaired by the Lt. Governor. The Commission's main responsibilities are to coordinate all National and Community Service in the state by administering AmeriCorps programs and Citizen Corps efforts in the state, including granting federal funds to local communities. In addition, it oversees America's Promise efforts and supports the network of 20 Volunteer Centers throughout the state.
History:
The Commission was established in February 1994 under the leadership and direction of Olene S. Walker and provides the opportunity for federal AmeriCorps funding, as well as other funds to be sub granted to local community organizations.
