Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a volunteer program designed to assist the Guardian ad Litem attorney who represents children in child welfare issues. A CASA volunteer is an advocate for a child and will make observations and recommendations in their behalf. The CASA has regular contact with a child and will remain on the case until the case is closed and there is permanency for the child.
Description:
An estimated 924,000 children in the US were victims of abuse or neglect last year. Utah is included in that number. The Office of Guardian ad Litem is a state agency which is appointed by the court to represent the best interests of children who are under the court's jurisdiction through no fault of their own. CASA is a part of the agency providing dedicated volunteers to aid in establishing that best interest.
History:
CASA was established in 1977 by Judge Sokum in Washington State in order for him to have accurate information about children's needs and lives so he could make informed decisions about their futures. It has grown into a national program in all 50 states.
