Volunteer Opportunity - A Fresh Start For Youth - Moving Kits Eagle Scout Group Service Projects

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on February 27, 2012

In our ongoing effort to stamp out juvenile homelessness we have discovered that as youth age out of residential, foster, or proctor care they are in desperate need of a few basic household supplies. As a result we are seeking what we call Fresh Start-Moving Kits. You can assist us by organizing a donation drive or hosting and item collection party, your efforts will meet the needs of this growing and very vulnerable population. This project is suitable for individuals, groups, families, and prospective Eagle Scouts.

Each kit should contain the following:

  1. Small first aid kit
  2. Flashlight
  3. Toiletry items (toothpaste, tooth brush, bar soap, lotion, shampoo)
  4. Set of 4 Dinner Plates/bowls/cups/silverware
  5. Assorted cooking utensils (can opener, mixing spoon, spatula, pan, pot)
  6. Small tool kit (hammer, screw driver, wrench)
  7. Twin size sheets/blankets
  8. 2 dish towels and 2 bath towels
  9. Alarm Clock

These kits work best put into a large duffel bag so youth can also use the duffel bag as a suitcase and laundry bag.

The staff was very kind and appreciative to our family!

Our family made birthday bags for the Juvenile Detention Center. This was a good experience for us even though we did not meet the people we were serving--the staff members told my children how much the bags would mean to kids on their birthdays. My children left feeling compassion and wanting to do more!

Yoga to teenagers?

I taught yoga once a week for 4-5 months at Observation and Accessment. It was crazy, fun, frustrating, and very rewarding. Some days there was a lot of immediate reward where kids love what we did and said how awesome it was. Other days they moaned and groaned the whole time. When I saw one of the kids after he got out walking down the street, he shouted "Yoga Lady". He promised me I would never see him at Juvie again, I knew it had all been worth it.
