Birthday bags needed for youth in Juvenile Justice Service custody!

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 1, 2010

Juvenile Justice Services has hundreds of youth go through our system each year in different facilities. Youth are ages 10-18. Many times they are in our care on their birthdays. We feel everyone should be recognized on their birthday. Groups have made birthday bags that could be given to them on their special day. They usually include a card (can be homemade) only first names should be on the card if you put a name on it.
You can put in a candy bar or granola bar, chips or pretzels, and a drink (such as capri sun, etc.) This small thoughtful gift cheers up the youth and lets them know, that although they have issues they need to work on, and changes to make, there are people who will support and care about them. Each person should make 5 bags each.

Yoga to teenagers?

I taught yoga once a week for 4-5 months at Observation and Accessment. It was crazy, fun, frustrating, and very rewarding. Some days there was a lot of immediate reward where kids love what we did and said how awesome it was. Other days they moaned and groaned the whole time. When I saw one of the kids after he got out walking down the street, he shouted "Yoga Lady". He promised me I would never see him at Juvie again, I knew it had all been worth it.
