| Description : |
|
The process for an infant adoption begins when a "birth mother" realizes she cannot parent a child and makes a decision to place that child for adoption. Often there is a match meeting(s) between the parties that is facilitated by agency personnel. When a birth mother signs the proper papers, the child is ready to be "placed" with a family. If the child is conceived in Utah, a birth father must have declared his paternity and taken steps to secure his rights prior to the mother's relinquishment. If he has not done this, he loses his rights and the child is free for adoption. Various laws apply in other states. The agency assists in the adoption in notifying fathers to abide by state laws as paternity rights are relinquished.
The child is now available to be taken home, fed, loved, and treated as your own. The agency makes three supervisory visits during the next six months to be sure that the child is thriving. If the child is adopted to an out-of-Utah family, another fully licensed adoption agency may perform this service. The child may be legally adopted after six months has passed. This process occurs in court and an attorney will be needed. |
