Volunteer Works To Give Families A Better Life
Above Salem resident Tara Riddle’s computer hangs a quote from Woodrow Wilson that reads, “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the highest creed.” Riddle demonstrates her belief in this quote by her continual effort to help every family and individual in the community have a better life. For the last four years, Riddle has been a leading hand in “I get to see a tremendous change in people’s lives,” Riddle said. “Habitat for Humanity offers the opportunity to build much more than houses. Through the building process, relationships are built, communities are strengthened, families are nurtured and a sense of hope is created. It is very empowering when you know you have the capability of making that kind of difference.” Since starting its affiliate in 1991, As a college student Riddle helped build a house in “I believe in Habitat’s overall mission of working with people rather than for them,” Riddle said. “The families that are accepted into the program have committed to do their share in building their own home through sweat equity. It has been said that the Habitat philosophy is a hand-up rather than a hand-out.” For Riddle, community service extends beyond Habitat for Humanity. She is actively involved with the Utah Valley Exchange Club and the Women's Advisory Council for local Intermountain Healthcare Hospitals. She is also a volunteer media critic for familystyle.com and was recently appointed by Governor Huntsman to serve as a member of the Fourth Judicial District Nominating Commission. “We all have the responsibility to do our part in making our communities better, and in turn you will become a changed person,” Riddle said. “I would encourage everyone to get involved in the community, and Habitat for Humanity is a great place to do it. I have found that whether you volunteer for a build day, on a committee or as a family mentor, you will learn skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.” According to Riddle, Habitat for Humanity is currently seeking long-term volunteers to serve on its board and committees.
