For many people, using a computer is as easy as speaking their native language. For others, computers are completely foreign, and any attempt to use them leads to getting lost in translation. For those people, there is hope. His name is Conrad Gibby. Gibby teaches a basic computer skills class to Spanish-speaking members of the community every Saturday. The classes are held on the second floor of the “You take for granted knowing what a left-mouse click and a right-mouse click does,” Gibby said. “We talk about what they want to learn about. A lot of it is really simple stuff, like learning how to use e-mail and Microsoft Word. A lot of them like to use e-mail because they can talk to their family and friends back home.” Originally from Mapleton, Gibby is currently a Gibby said his volunteer work is a great way for him to continue to serve the Latino community and still keep up on his Spanish. One of the reasons he decided to volunteer at the library was because it would be utilizing his talents for a good cause. “I was looking for some place to serve, some place that could use the skills that I had,” Gibby said. Gibby has been volunteering since the beginning of the summer. The classes he teaches are held on the weekends. Some may view his willingness to give up summer weekends as a sacrifice, but Gibby said it’s a pleasure to be able to help members of the community. One fulfilling thing that has come from Gibby’s service is the fact that he is discovering new things while helping others. “I find myself learning stuff I wouldn’t have learned if I wouldn’t have been teaching,” Gibby said. Service is a way that Gibby is giving back to the community. He said that those who serve are able to grow personally while sharing the talents they possess to help others. “I think it’s important to give a little bit of who and what you are because it gives other people a chance to learn and grow,” Gibby said “When you’re building others up, you’re building yourself up.” |
