Dedicated To Those With Disabilities

Devoting time to those in need has become a way of life for one volunteer. Through numerous hours of service, children with disabilities and their families throughout the community are being strengthened by the efforts of one woman.

For more than a year and a half, Melissa Erickson has donated her time to Friday’s Kids Respite, a relief service for families of children with disabilities. Every Friday night, volunteers, nurses and supervisors gather to tend children of all ages while their parents or caretakers have the evening off.

“Melissa really has genuine love for those she serves,” said Toshiko Dignam, executive director for Friday’s Kids Respite. “She is one of our most loyal and dedicated volunteers.”

Donating at least four hours a week since January 2007, Erickson has played an essential role in the success of Friday’s Kids Respite. She not only coordinates the efforts of all the volunteers, oversees all the night’s activities and cleaning, but she also spends quality time with the children.

“She has the ability to reach the children in a very unique way,” Dignam said. “She understands and communicates with them well and gets past that disability barrier.”

Since the age of eleven, Erickson has been working and interacting with developmentally disabled children. She took a babysitting job, so she could help a family with disabled children, for several years.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with children who have disabilities, and it’s always been one of my desires.” Erickson said. “They have very special spirits and an unconditional love for those around them.”

Erickson’s generosity does not stop with just her time. Frequently she gives monetary donations to Friday’s Kids Respite when the organization cannot afford something.

“Melissa has purchased books, toys, craft items and many other things for our organization and the individuals who attend,” Dignam said. “She understands the budget restraints and cheerfully reaches into her own pocket to help.”

Another gift from Erickson went to help her own brother. When one of her brothers, who also had learning disabilities, was diagnosed with bone cancer she donated her bone marrow for a transplant he desperately needed. Shortly after recovering, she was back at Friday’s Kids Respite donating her time.

“Volunteering gives me a break from my week,” Erickson said. “The kids are so special, and they give back so much with the love they share and their spirits. It rejuvenates my spirit to watch them grow, learn and develop.”

In addition to her time with Friday’s Kids Respite, Erickson serves as a leader in her local church youth group. In this capacity she has spread her passion for service and volunteer work to a younger generation as she takes the group twice a month to Community Action Services.

“Many are unaware of the extent of her service because she quietly and diligently goes about her work without thought of recognition,” Dignam said. “Even the families who see her consistently on respite nights don’t realize how much of an impact she has on the community.”

Friday’s Kids Respite is always looking for volunteers to help with children on Thursday and Friday nights. Supervisors, coordinators and volunteers are needed to organize and implement activities for those in attendance. To donate your services, contact Toshiko Dignam at 494-9837.

“If you’re looking for something that will uplift yourself and bring joy into your life, I would start by volunteering,” Erickson said. “Service is very rewarding, and you can really make a difference in the lives of families and children.”
