For the past nine years, Gene Nelson, director of the Provo City Library at Academy Square, has helped others develop a love of literacy through Project Read.
“[Nelson] is passionate about Project Read, and he is a huge support,” said Shauna Brown, director of Project Read. “When he gets behind something, he will always give 100 percent.”
During the planning stages of the Provo City Library, Nelson became the director of the library and was asked to serve on the board of Project Read. His time and dedication help the program in a variety of ways.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of what we do,” Brown said. “We could not run the program without them.”
Provo City Library has partnered with Project Read since 1986. Although the adult literacy program is housed in the library, it is an independent organization. Project Read offers one-on-one tutorials to help individuals develop and expand their reading and writing skills.
“Through Project Read, lives are changed and altered,” Nelson said. “Reading is so important to every aspect of life because it is a fundamental building block allowing all to enjoy the world around them.”
Nelson has volunteered on the Project Read Board of Trustees, served as board chair, helped with fundraising efforts and supported Project Read’s Annual Spelling Bee.
“As a board member, I have seen the impact that volunteer tutors have on their students,” Nelson said. “It’s easy to see growth and very satisfying to be involved.”
Although individuals may be reluctant to come forward for help, the program is an asset to those who get involved. More than 60 individuals are active in Project Read and are continually improving their reading and writing.
“If someone is struggling,” Nelson said. “Hook them up with Project Read.”
To participate in the program, students must be 16 years old and above. An annual $10 fee is required. For more information about Project Read or to become involved either as a student or a volunteer tutor, contact Project Read at 852-6654. |
