Senior Volunteer Helps Students For More Than A Decade
“Betty has become a role model for many of the students,” said Terri Sherrell, special education teacher at Rocky Mountain Elementary. “Many of the children come from difficult homes and they need the support that Betty can give.” According to Sherrell, Morgan has become part of the school. The faculty and students call her “grandma” and the school includes her picture with the staff directory. “Many at the school think that she is a paid aide,” Sherrell said. “She is here so often they think she is one of the employees. She is a superwoman.” Each day Morgan is in the classroom, in the cafeteria and on the playground with the students. She helps the children learn to read, write and communicate effectively. She even attends school fieldtrips. “I’m a grandma to all the children,” Morgan said. “Life is all about helping other people. It fills your life with peace, love and happiness.” Sherrell has had Morgan volunteering in her classroom for the last five years. She said she greatly appreciates her spirit of service. Sherrell has watched as Morgan is able to love and assist the students who have a difficult time in the classroom. “Betty has a great sense of direction in her life,” Sherrell said. “She will give service until the day she dies.” Morgan encourages others to volunteer in the public school system. She has found that there is a need for dedicated individuals who can make it easier for the children to learn. “The most important thing a volunteer can do is care for and accept the children for who they are,” Morgan said. “They can do a lot to help the children feel good about themselves. A good sense of humor and a love for service can do so much.” |
